Thumbnail before finished paper
Make several small pencil rectangles and test line breaks. A thumbnail is not miniature art; it is a cheap way to make structural decisions before using better paper.
Decoration comes last
Review reading order, margins and spacing first. If the page already feels dense without flourishes, adding decoration rarely solves the underlying problem.
Final review
Photograph the piece straight from above if useful. Seeing the page at a smaller scale can reveal spacing and balance problems that are hard to notice while writing.
